Dancing in the distraction factory Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwins theory suggested that music videos were put into three different categories:
- Illustration
- Amplification
- Disjunction
These specific music videos are made to match the lyrics of the song and to express the meanings of the specific topics. These music videos tend to cut to the beat and the band members are mostly shown and are dressed as expected. Some examples
Owl city - Fireflies
Amplification
With amplification music videos normally cut off beat to create extra emphasis but sometimes it does cut on the beat. Unlike illustration music videos the themes and topics and shown in a more abstract way. In a amplification music video it is very rare to see the band and if they are shown then the band tend to take on fictional characters. Some examples of this are shown below.
Disjuncture
Compared to the last two types of music video, disjuncture videos cut off the beat and throughout the music video the images which are shown on screen do not relate to the lyrics of the song. Normally disjuncture music videos are used by bands who are well known. The bands tend to be shown in disjuncture music videos and they normally take up an image which is opposite of their expected image. Some examples are shown below.

Cutting to the beat is a main convention when it comes to music videos below are some examples used in in "Numb"
Normally in a music video the pace of the cuts are increased when it gets further into the song, below is an example of this.
